Let’s settle this, babe. Dark spots and acne scars are different. Acne scars are damaged skin tissue and take a lot longer to fully *ever* heal. But there are ways you can smooth over the appearance of them. Dark spots from sun exposure, however, are on the surface of your skin. They’re usually not accompanied by tissue damage, so it’s easier to fade their appearance.

So, shall we get into it? Here are 4 ways to get brighter, even skin.

Brighten with Vitamin C.

Drink water. Get plenty of sleep. Start using vitamin C. It’s your foundation, babe. This ingredient helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and can even help stop it in its tracks. Toot toot. It’s also an antioxidant, which means it can help block out future cell damage. Like a bodyguard for your face.

Exfoliate with Glycolic acid.

Chemical exfoliation is the key to fewer dark spots. And generally smoother, more even skin. Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that helps dissolve the glue that binds dead cells together (and to your face). Yep, some of these dead cells are responsible for your dark spots. Ditch the dead skin, ditch the dark spots.

Reduce with Salicylic acid.

Another type of chemical exfoliation. But instead of an AHA, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). This super acid helps with surface redness and irritation. Plus it removes excess oil built up in your pores to stop future pimples from popping up and leaving their mark.

Prevent with Sunscreen.

Broad spectrum, babe. That way you’re safe from both rays; the ones responsible for skin cancer but also the ones responsible for fine lines and dark spots. Use it every day, especially if you’re using the above ingredients as they can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Apply even if you’re not going outside. There’s nothing healthy about a tan. Unless it’s from a bottle, #letsbefrank.
